approved a change that will block school districts from considering
race or ethnicity in admitting children to gifted programs.
Most white and Asian students... score at least 130 on an IQ test to
get admitted. Minority students, children with limited English skills
and low-income children did not have to take the initial standardized
test. They then have to score at least 120 on IQ tests.

@@McArthur Foundation Fellow Program "Genius" Awards
The McArthur Foundation is famous for it's "Genius" awards, but
contrary to conventional measures of intelectual ability, such as
test scores, minorities are typically over-represented among these
awards. Asians recently have been about on par with white
representation. 531 total 1981-1988. The awards have been criticized
by conservatives as favoring left wing flakes and wackos from San
Francisco or New York.

So, they definitely skew blonder than American women as a whole. While no
doubt the majority are lightening their hair, their surnames also skew toward
the blonder ethnic groups. However, several are probably stage names, and
people normally make up Anglo-Saxon names, so I wouldn't read too much into
it. Nonetheless, the number of German/ Nordic/ Russian names, which generally
aren't chosen as stage names, is high.

Subject: [h-bd] Blondes: only 3 of 11 classic playmates
Steve is right. Blondes certainly predominate among recent playmates. In
the interests of science ;-), I attempted a similar analysis of early
Playboy centerfolds. I was unable to find any complete archives from the
1950s and 1960s, but I did find a site called "Classic Playmates" (with a
disclaimer that the women in question are now probably older than your
mother).
What surprised me was the low proportion of blondes from the early Playboy
period. The breakdown is as follows:
------------------------------
Blonde hair: 3 women
Connie Mason (1963)
Allison Parks (1965)
Helena Antonaccio (1969)
-------------------------------
Brown hair: 6 women
Laura Young (1962)
Toni Ann Thomas (1963)
Melinda Windsor (1966)
Fran Gerard (1967)
Cynthia Myers (1968)
Crystal Smith (1971)
-------------------------
Red/Brown hair: 2 women
Merle Pertile (1962)
Donna Michelle (1963)
--------------------------
I'm not sure what conclusion I should draw from this. Have the tastes of
American men changed over the past 30-40 years? Was the supply of potential
playmates less blonde back in the 1960s? Or is this just sampling error?

greater than what we would expect from the value of this ratio in the

to show up in Time's list over 2 years, where Asians are all but

EXAMINATION SCHOOLS DOMINATE WESTINGHOUSE SCIENCE CONTEST

Comment - Norman Matloff, archenemy of merit insists that selecting
students with the highest test scores has nothing to do with the
quality of an instutition. So if high test scores aren't a measure of
merit, he has also said that the high number of Asians winning this
contest isn't an indication of superior ability either.
