Another tactic is to say that AIDS rates vary between different Asian ethnicities, and indeed, the Japanese and Filipinos are the highest. But even when broken down, every ethnic group is still substantially lower than whites in every city. Anyone who says that AIDS is higher for persons of color is making a false statement unless they exclude Asians and Native Americans. While it appears cultural reasons should be sufficient to explain low rates of AIDS due to sex between men, it is interesting that Asians and Native Americans are genetically similar, if there is a genetic basis for these low rates.
When broken down by transmission factor, the only causes where Asians are at or near parity with whites are hemophiliacs and blood transfusions, and the least are gay and drug users. That means when culture is not involved, Asians are just as likely to get AIDS. Most tests of gay men show Asians to be just as HIV positive as other gay men. When you solve the paradox of Asian men having just as much AIDS, but few AIDS cases overall, it basically means there are few Asian gay men!.
Summary - for almost every cause, for every sub-ethnic group, in every city, state, county, nationally, and internationally, Asians have the lowest rate of AIDS of any racial group from a factor of 3 nationally to 20 in San Francisco. This has almost never been reported. Even less reported is that rates for Native Americans is also much lower than for whites. Despite this, headlines proclaim that Asia is the #1 danger area for AIDS, and there are articles that say that Asian women are especially at risk for AIDS even though they are at the LOWEST risk for any race / gender group.
The only exceptions are rural areas where there are few white homosexuals, and in Asia, countries with regions with high rates of IV drug use (Ruili Chian, Northern Thailand) This appears to be explainable only by low rates of drug use and homosexuality (see gay, sex and drug entries) Experts are claiming very high rates of AIDS and HIV, and Asia already having half of new HIV infections worldwide, far exceeding US cases on the basis of only a few hundred reported cases. Much could be learned about AIDS prevention if people wanted to study why Asian Ameiricans have such low rates of AIDS, but it is a political taboo. Not one dime has been spent to explain low AIDS rates for Asians, but much has been spent trying to paint a picture of Asians at risk
Frequently Asked Questions About Asians and AIDS
Q. IS THE RATE OF AIDS LOWER FOR ASIANS?
According to experts, the figures may say that Asians are
underrepresented, and that the per capita rates are lower, but "rates
are much higher for specific groups" and "we may be underestimating
or undercounting" in these communities. But AIDS is lower for almost
every subgroup except the most distressed PI communities, and lower
by a factor of 3 to 10 in every city, county and state for every year.
So yes, the rate is a LOT lower. Period.
Q. IS ASIAN AIDS IMMUNITY A MYTH?
Q. Is it true that Asians get just as much AIDS as anyone else, and
that it is a myth that Asians are "immune" to AIDS? A. The "myth"
arises out of the rarely mentioned, if not outright banned fact that
documented rates of AIDS for Asian Americans in every city and state
are much lower than for whites, for almost every cause, and every
ethnic subgroup. Asians really aren't immune, evidently, they simply
don't do the things you need to do to get AIDS as much as other
groups, and in fact gay Asians have just as much AIDS as other gay
men. In fact, Asians suffer from AIDS just as much for non-behavioral
causes such as blood transfusions. By contrast, for Blacks,
non-behavioral causes are the LOWEST AIDS rate, indicating that
between the races, Asians have the lowest, and Blacks the highest
rates of risky behaviors that will get you AIDS. This also means that
if you're searching for HIV free gay sex, don't look to gay Asian men.
HOW DO ASIANS GET AIDS?
Q. How are Asians most and least likely to get AIDS compared with
Whites? Asians are least likely to get AIDS compared to whites due
to gay sex, and drug injection. The only categories equal or higher
than whites are blood transfusion, and immigration from countries
like Africa.

AIDS AFFLICTS PERSONS OF _SOME_ COLORS
Q. Is it true that persons of color have higher rates of AIDS? A.
Only African Americans have consistently and significantly higher
rates of AIDS than whites, and this is not even true in places like
San Francisco where AIDS is still mostly a white gay phenomenon.
Hispanics are higher primarily in the Northeast because of drug
injection among Puerto Ricans. Native Americans are lower in AIDS in
most cities and nationally, and this is the only place on the planet
where you can read this in print.
Asian Americans have much lower rates of AIDS case than whites in
amost every documented locality, though this has rarely been reported
by any newspaper. There appears to be an unwritten rule that only
whites are allowed to have the appearance of the lowest AIDS rates to
maintain the appearance of the traditional racial ranking of
discrimination.

WHERE IS ASIAN AIDS DATA?
Q. Is it true that there is a lack of AIDS data for Asians? A. Every
city, county and state with any Asian population reports AIDS by
race. It appears however than government authorities and the press
choses not to highlight Asians because they are the only group
consistently lower than whites. The lack of data is solely due to
editorial choice, not a lack of basic data. This web page is one of
the only place where you'll see numbers with Asians, and certainly
the only one that will tell you in so many words that Asians are the
lowest.
Q. IS ASIAN AIDS DATA UNDER-REPORTED BECAUSE THEY DON'T WANT TO
ADMIT TO HAVING AIDS OR BEING GAY?
A. There has never been any evidence to support the assertion that
actual AIDS rates are much higher than reported rates. The
percentages of AIDS cases attributed to homosexuality in fact are
sometimes higher for Asians than for other groups because the rate of
relative drug use is even lower than measurable rates of
homoexuality. If Asians were reluctant to admit they were gay, then
they would report other causes for their condition, but the
percentage of gay AIDS cases is just as high or higher for Asians
than Whites, and the rates for blood transfusions are exactly as high
as whites, so the likely rate of under-reporting for that cause is
zero.
In my review of the literature, there is no evidence to support the
notion that the actual rate of AIDS among Asians is significantly
higher than reported rates. This is also suspect due to low HIV rates
among those tested blindly, such as mothers, military recruiters, and
health clinics. If the rate of AIDS among Asian gays is equal to
other groups, but the rate of AIDS among Asians in general is lower,
algebra tells us that this means a smaller number of Asian gays.
Ranked by US AIDS cases caused by sex between men, male adults and
adolescents: Asian gay cases are just as high as whites as a
percentage of total cases.

Q. Is it true that homosexuality and sexual activity are the same for
all races and all cultures?
A. This is a popular political assertion which has no basis in actual
statistics. Homosexuality does exist in all cultures and races,
however that does not mean they occur at the same rates. Most
statements of racial parity are based on number of Blacks, and most
figures are close to whites. However, by every possible method of
counting Asians and surveys of sexual behaviorss in the gay
community, Stanford University is the only place I have documented
with rates of homosexual participation or self-identification
comparable to whites. Heterosexual activity by any measure is also
lower in most cases.

Q. Is it true that the rate of AIDS varies greatly and Filipinos have
much higher rates of AIDS than other Asian groups? A. Yes, but this
statement is used to hide the fact than even when split out
individually, every Asian sub-ethnic group still has much lower rates
of AIDS than whites. For example, in Los Angeles, Thais have the
highest rate for Asians, but it's still only 1/3 the rate of whites.
The rate for Koreans is only 1/60 that of whites in Los Angeles or
San Francisco. However, Asian AIDS rates in cities like San
Francisco is higher than for whites elsewhere in the country like
North Dakota.

Q. DOES ASIA HAVE THE GREATEST AIDS PROBLEM?
A. Why do people insist on pointing the finger at populations at the
least risk? The truth is that Asia, with the exception of a couple of
locations, has by far the lowest rates of AIDS for most nations in
the world, and projections that Asia will have 50% of AIDS cases by
last year are based on extrapolations with no reasonable basis in
fact, or confirmed cases of AIDS.

the lower rate of Asian homosexuals almost entirely explains the low
overall rate of Asian AIDS. The rate of increase is higher than
whites, but the overall rate of AIDS is still much lower, and not
likely to ever equal or exceed whites. Note that you will never find
this interpretation from official agencies. The official position on
Asians and AIDS is either (A) the rate of AIDS is just as high for

it is getting worse (but will never get close to rates for other

Africa isn't dying of Aids
'In 1993 Botswana had an estimated population of 1.4 million. Today
that figure is under a million..may soon become the first nation in
modern times literally to die out.' Really? ..census shows population
growing at about 2.7 per cent a year.. has risen to 1.7 million in
just a decade. If anything, Botswana is experiencing a minor
population explosion.
Epimodel estimated 250,000 Aids deaths in 1999, but there were only
375,000 adult deaths in total that year - far too few to accommodate
the UN's claims on behalf of the HIV virus. In short, Epimodel had
failed its reality check.

Summary: Asians have the lowest HIV prevelance, nearly as low as
women overall The highest relative rate of AIDS for Asians is for
blood transfusions, about parity with whites. For blacks, the LOWEST
rate is for blood transfusions, and that's still twice as high as
whites. This supports the theory that Asian "immunity" to AIDS is
cultural, not genetic since hemophiliacs and blood transfusions are
largely involuntary, and the AIDS rates are about the same for these
causes. Since Asians have the lowest rate of AIDS due to male-male
sex, this strongly implies a very low rate of this activity.

ASIANS AT RISK - NOT! AIDS IN HAWAII IS MOSTLY GAY WHITES, ASIANS
HAVE LOWEST RATE OF AIDS
One recent health report attributed high rates of AIDS in Hawaii to
its being the gateway to the Pacific. But the fact is that AIDS at
the start "almost all of Hawaii's AIDS cases were in Caucasians who
were MSMs (men sex with men). During the last 5 years 1992-96, about
half of Hawaii's cases continued to be in this group" even though gay
white men are a tiny percentage of the population. "Collectively,
Asians and Pacific Islanders have Hawaii's lowest race-specific AIDS
rates at 9.9% of the population and 26% of the AIDS cases" (even
though they are 2/3 of the population). Unlike the mainland, Asians
are the majority population and the common excuse that there aren't
enough Asians to provide a statistically valid rate doesn't wash
here. While the ban on reporting that Asians have the lowest rate of
AIDS still applies in general, it does appear in this AIDS

San Francisco has a very large Asian population, but not very well
assimilated into the large percentage of white gay men. San Francisco
is one of the few cities where blacks still have not exceeded the
white AIDS rate - which is over 5% of the white population! San
Francisco has the lowest relative Asian AIDS rate of any US city,
1/20, compared to 1/3 nationally. Asian HIV rates are either zero or
much lower than every other race in every HIV survey, risk category
and study in every year.
Asian AIDS rates are much lower than whites in the city, but higher
than whites in low AIDS areas. Asians are the only minorities with
dramatically lower AIDS rates, but this has never been noted or
studied, presumably for political reasons.

Surprise finding: Women generally have lower rates of AIDS than men,
however in San Francisco, Asian men have lower AIDS rates than Black
and Native American women.
Asian women have the lowest AIDS rate of any group, despite headlines
of special risks for Asians.
The moderators of sci.med.aids considers this observation to be
"racist" and unacceptable, and turned it down as in informational

%%San Jose - See Santa Clara
%%Santa Clara County
Santa Clara County has the highest rate of Asian AIDS on the mainland
US (3-4%) even though San Francisco has a higher pecentage of Asians.
This is probably due to a smaller proportion of gay whites than San
Francisco, and a higher proportion of Asians who are gay, vs. San
Francisco whose Chinatown has a high proportion of traditional
Asians.

by far the lowest rate, now about 2/3, it was once as low as 1/3 the

Asians have the lowest rate of AIDS due to men having sex with men,
along with Native Americans. Since gay sex is the number one cause of
AIDS, this is also the largest reason for the low overall rate of
AIDS for /Asians. See Asian.gay to see that Asians have the lowest
rate of homosexuality by nearly any sample or criterion of
measurement.
However, the Asian rate of AIDS due to gay sex as a percentage of all
causes in some cities has been as high or higher than other groups,
which pretty much destroys the notion that Asian gays are simply in
the closet, or won't admit it. A 2001 CDC survey says even Asian gay
men have lower HIV rates than other gay men, which may indicate that
even Asian gay men may be more risk averse than other men.

AIDS Rampant Among Young Gay Blacks
By DANIEL Q. HANEY, AP Medical Editor
The study found that among young gay men [in cities], 3 percent of
Asians, 7 percent of whites, 15 percent of Hispanics and 30 percent
of blacks are infected with the virus.

HIGH BLACK GAY AIDS RATE CONSISTENT WITH OTHER STD RATES
Using the method of thresholds
(http://www.lagriffedulion.f2s.com/fuzzy.htm) the gay-straight
promiscuity gap for each group is:
gay-straight promiscuity gap (SD)
Black 1.7
Hispanic 2.1
White 1.9
Asian 1.6
Across racial and ethnic boundaries, gays are about 2 SD more
promiscuous than straights.
Arbitrarily setting the 'promiscuity' of whites to zero, we find:
promiscuity gap promiscuity gap
for gays (SD) for general pop. (SD)
(from AIDS data) (from gonorrhea data)
Black 1.0 1.2
Hispanic 0.44 0.28
White 0.0 0.0
Asian -0.41 -0.13
Viewed in this way, against the white rate, the rate for black gays
isn't any higher than it is for gonorrhea. The only surprise is that
Asian homosexuals have a lower rate of AIDS than might be predicted
from their gonorrhea rate in the general Asian population.

Data from the latest Seattle / King County STD Clinic HIV survey and
AIDS reports show that Asians have only 1/4 as many AIDS cases
relative to their population compared to whites. They have slightly
more than half as many STD clinic patients. But HIV rates are
comparable between white and Asian heterosexuals in STD clinics, and
betwen whites and Asian men who have sex with men. This means that
the lower rate of AIDS and HIV infection is due almost entirely to
lower rate of Asians who have sex with men.
This is directly counter to the commonly held but unproven belief
that male homosexuality is equal across all races. Asian men who had
sex with men were only 1/3 their population compared with whites
among STD clinic patients. No one else has made this analysis, or for
that matter, any sensible explanation or even observation of the low
AIDS rate for Asians.

A common saying is that "Asians are the fastest growing AIDS group"
Wrong. Asians are increasing about as fast as other minorities, but
50% increase in 3 to 5 years is nearly offset by 25-30% increase in
population. Relative to population, Asians are not the 'fastest
growing' AIDS group. In terms of absolute AIDS rates, Blacks are

Compared to population, Gay/Bisexual men are 33 times their population (assuming 3%
of men are gay) By contrast, Asians are only 1 / 10 their population. Not only are
Asians the least affected because of few gays, but of all races, they have the smallest
proportion of AIDS cases due to IV drug use as well.
The original article noted high rates of AIDS among "minorities", but did not make note
of the very high percentage of gays, or the very low percentage of Asians, consistent
with the unspoken taboo against recognizing low rates of AIDS or drug use or any other
risk behavior / outcome among Asians.

BLACKS, WHITES HAVE DIFFERENT AMOUNT OF AIDS SENSITIVE GENES
\clip\99\08\geneaid.txt Study Link Genes, AIDS Progression By PAUL
RECER AP Science Writer WASHINGTON (AP) -- Inherited genes may
explain why some people infected with HIV quickly develop AIDS while
others with the virus live for years in relatively good health,
scientists report. In a study published today in the journal Science,
researchers at the National Cancer Institute say differences in the
inherited pattern of what are called HLA Class I genes appear to
determine who gets sickest soonest after an HIV infection. About 10
percent of the white patients had the Cw04 form, she said, but it was
present in about 25 percent of the black patients.

Mutation Protects Some People From HIV Infection, Researchers Say By
LAWRENCE K. ALTMAN. A double copy of a mutant gene which protects
against HIV is predicted to be found in 1% of European origin, much
lower rates in blacks and Japanese. Studies may link it to high rates
of AIDS in Africa. Comment - Asia has the lowest rates of AIDS in the
world, and Asian Ameicans the lowest in the US, along with socialist
European countries, so it probably has more to do with behavior than
genes.

PREDICTIONS ARE THAT ASIA WILL BE WORST, BUT IN FACT ASIA IS THE
LEAST AFFECTED BY AIDS
If there are so many infected people in Asia 2-4 million, why is it
that the number of documented cases is only 1/4 the number of the
Americas?? Are they just pulling numbers out of a hat? Why is it so
important to predict that AIDS will take over where it has had the
least effect so far in the epidemic, with only 6% of AIDS cases, but
over half the world's population?

Summary: Chinese health officials report there are only 43 official
cases of AIDS and 23 deaths due to AIDS. Most were men who were IV
drug users. There are only 1,500 reported HIV infections, with
estimates of unreported cases of up to 10,000. Health officials
attribute low numbers to misdiagnosis, poor reporting and
misdiagnosis. But this means that China with 1/5 of the world's
population only accounts for 0.00043% of reported AIDS cases, 1 / 4651
their share of population, and just 0.05% of world HIV infections, 1 /
400 their share of population. Santa Clara County (greater San Jose)
alone has reported 62 cases of Asians with AIDS. These numbers don't
mean that China has a large AIDS problem, rather it shows that
statistically speaking, AIDS in the world's largest country is
practically nonexistent.

In the United States, the number of infected people in 1992 -- the

900,000, or 0.26 to 0.4 percent.
No country is free of HIV infection, nor is any province of India or
China, (but China is as statistically close to zero as you can get,
yet still gets headlines)
For instance, the number of new infections in San Francisco has
dropped to about 1,000 a year from 8,000 a year in the early 1980s.
(primarily due to the end of massive promiscuous and unsafe sex among
gay men, nearly all infections continue to be from that population
which continues to have unsafe sex, and sex with condoms which has
not been shown to be very safe by any controlled study compared to
heterosexual sex)

d:\doc\94\17\priv\jpaids11.txt SJM 8/7/94 JAPAN TRIES TO QUELL ANXIETY

But with the Japanese Health and Welfare Ministry claiming a
remarkably low count of 764 full-blown AIDS cases, (of which 94 are
foreigners), and 3,075 cases of HIV infection, (741 are foreigners),
some experts allege that the government -- and much of the public --
is doing its best to sweep the truth under the rug.
Except for the gay community, which has taken charge of its own
education and support activities, most Japanese appear blissfully out
of touch with the reality that AIDS is spreading most rapidly among
heterosexual men and women. Society still tends to look at AIDS as an
affliction of foreign -- principally American -- homosexuals. Of the
estimated 20 percent of Japanese men who use prostitutes in Japan and
on sex tours around Southeast Asia, three-fourths refuse to wear
condoms.
According to Tsunetsugu Munakata of Tsukuba University, one of
Japan's leading AIDS experts, ''the government's figures mean
nothing'' because ''most people who contract the virus don't go for a
checkup.''
Munakata, who has addressed previous International AIDS Conferences in
Europe, said his own extensive research indicates there are
''somewhere between 10,000 and 73,000'' AIDS and HIV cases in Japan --
between 2.5 and 19 times more than the government claims.

only 764 cases to the end of June, and 94 (1/8) of these were
foreigners. Recorded HIV infections numbered only 3,075, including
741 (1/4) foreigners.
This phenomenon is helped by the lack of a narcotics culture in Japan,
and the widespread use of condoms as a contraceptive -- the pill is
not widely available. But the main reason is that, by the time Japan's
first AIDS case came to light in 1985, prevention methods were already
well known.

SJM 8/10/94 In 20 years, as many as 2.7 million Thais, 10 percent of
the present adult population, could die of AIDS. Nearly 1 million or
1.7% of total population of 58 million, currently are believed to
suffer from HIV. Roughly 5 percent to 10 percent of those have
developed AIDS.
But reported Thai AIDS case rate of 1.3 per 100,000 is only 1/5 that
of the US, where AIDS at half a million cases has affected less .16
percent of the population.
Reported rates are comparable to reported US Asian rates, where cases
are so low activists are fighting perceptions that Asians are not
affected. 1.7% is estimate of HIV rate, which is extremely high.
Military rate of 3.5 to 20 percent is much higher than us rate of 0.1
percent, as is natal clinics of 8% in one province, but you can't
extrapolate to an entire country from one city. comparable to US inner
cities, but either it's started so recently none of the cases has
progressed, or they're not progressing. Dusenberg says aids may not
even be caused by the virus.

PLIGHT 8/2/94 SJM
Currently worst hit is Thailand. AIDS rapidly took root among
prostitutes but has now spread to the general population. Over 3.5
percent of military recruits aged 21 were reported HIV-positive in
1992, (much higher than US rate of less than 1 percent) and one
province, Chang Rai, had a prevalence rate of 20 percent. Eight
percent of women attending post-natal clinics in the province were
infected. However, Thailand may stand out mainly because of the number
of tests conducted there. There is great uncertaintly about the
situation in countries like India and Burma.
