For example, I've seen published estimates for the average of IQ of Eskimoes of both 100 and of about 70. We don't even have consensus estimates yet for the Japanese or for American Jews -- published reports vary by a half a standard deviation. We do have very solid estimates for American whites and blacks because several major IQ tests have been normed on these populations, with huge sample sizes used in the norming process, but for lots of other populations, we often have one or two studies with sample sizes of 50 or 100 individuals. Various obvious problems include finding a representative sample, finding a test that's culturally appropriate, making sure to adequately motivate the test-takers, accounting for differences in the structure of talents within the population (e.g., some groups are better at visual tests, while others are better at verbal tests), and adjusting for the Flynn-Lynn Effect (a big issue in estimating East Asian IQ's). ------------------------------------------------------------------------ How to contribute to H-Bd: 1.
