Below is the latest Forbes ASAP 100 list of the richest people in high tech in America. It's a better list for tracking entrepreneurial accomplishment since almost everybody is a self-made man [only H-P is old enough to spawn inherited high tech fortunes]. The list appears to be made up of 96 men, 1 woman [Susan Packard 0rr, heir to H-P fortune], and three husband-wife teams. The data is about 18 months old, so it's terribly out of date of course, but still interesting. When the next list comes out, the woman who runs eBay will almost certainly make it, and I would expect the list to become somewhat more female over the years as hardware and software firms diminish in importance relative to Internet retail and media companies. There are five men with South Asian surnames on the list and three with Chinese names. There are no Spanish surnames on the list, and I strongly doubt that there are any blacks. [Blacks, however, have made the general Forbes 400 list, and not just 0prah -- for example, Reginald F. Lewis made the Forbes 400 via leveraged buyouts in the Eighties before dying suddenly of brain cancer. His Filipina wife now runs Beatrice TLC.] Among high-tech rich guys, there are lots of Jews [e.g., Michael Dell and Larry Ellison in the top 6], but, possibly, a slightly lower percentage than in say the Forbes 400, where, I've read, the Jewish proportion tends to run 20%-25%. By far the largest ethnic group on the list appears to be WASPs: for example, in the top 8 there are Bill Gates, Paul Allen, Gordon Moore, Ted Waitt, and William Hewlett. Back in 1983 Tom Wolfe wrote a long article about Silicon Valley and one of his main points was the Midwestern small town, Protestant, middle class origins of so many hotshots in the early decades of Silicon Valley.
