The Catholic Church > was famous for supressing science, but I believe the Vatican is also > tolerant today. > Most Jews, at least Jews of European origin, are generally very liberal in their religious beliefs. In a publish interview the local Rabbi here (Huntsville, AL) stated that he could "no longer believe in the God of his ancestors." They are simply poles apart from the fundamentalists, and after all, it is only the fundamentalists of any religion who oppose evolution and champion creationism. If indeed Jews of European origin do measure, in IQ, one standard deviation above the average of others of European descent, then that would put them at least one standard deviation above the average fundamentalist. Others would argue more but I would have to disagree. Fundamentalists are just average people who have undergone total indoctrination into their fundamentalists beliefs while their minds were still young and malleable. So that is my take on why the vast majority of Jews are not creationists. As for other religions, Muslims, almost to the man, (women don't count is Islamic society) are creationists. I lived among them for five years and I met one, just one, who was not a fundamentalist. He was a Pakistani, raised in England. Also, as in your average Christian fundamentalists, this has more to do with total indoctrination as children than intelligence. They do believe the Old Testament. They believe, like most fundamentalist Christians, that the Jews were once God's chosen, but now fallen, children. Now fundamentalists on the list, please don't get mad at me. Some very highly intelligent people are fundamentalist creationists. My dad was one of them. What I am saying however is that fundamentalism is directly proportional to early indoctrination and inversely proportional to IQ. It takes very strong and very early indoctrination to mold a very intelligent person into that of a young earth creationist. It has happened however and if we can pass enough laws against evolution, it will happen even more often. Ron Patterson
