A thought I keep looking for in the discussion of Carol Iannone's conundrum is that the over-representation of Asians at elite colleges does not reflect their high over-all IQs -- it reflects their extraordinary abilities in one dimension of IQ: visuospatial intelligence, which supports scientific and mathematical ability. Asians are actually below average in the SAT verbals: In 1998, their average verbal score was 498, vs. 505 for all college-bound seniors. They are getting into those elite colleges because of their math SATs, which averaged 562 that year, vs. 528 for white Americans and 511 for all college-bound seniors ...
