Updated 5:05 PM ET May 21, 1999 AUSTIN, Texas (BUSINESS WIRE) - Now students can practice the Math portion of the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills Test On-line -- and citizens and parents can take a closer look at the TAAS test -- on a new Web site developed by the Texas Business and Education Coalition. Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors who failed the Math TAAS Test in February, can prepare on-line for free for the July 14 Math Exit TAAS Retake. The site, located at http://www.tbec.org, allows anyone to "Take the Math TAAS" test and view the results for grades 3rd through Exit. Site visitors can choose different versions of the math tests, including short demonstrations, tutorials, practice tests and complete diagnostic tests for grades three through eight as well as the 10th-grade Exit TAAS. Only the mathematics tests are available now, but the group plans to expand the site to include reading, according to John Stevens, TBEC executive director. "This site will help students prepare for their tests, and it will also help parents understand what is expected of their children academically," Stevens said. "When parents and other members of the public see TAAS questions for the first time, some seem surprised at how sensible the tests are. These are questions that we can agree our kids should be able to answer. TAAS covers material that students need to learn." The TAAS is a standardized test that measures students' proficiency in meeting the learning objectives in the Texas public school curriculum. It provides the data that teachers and parents need to measure a student's progress. It is also the cornerstone of Texas' successful program to make teachers and schools accountable for results, Stevens said. The Texas Business and Education Coalition is a non-profit organization of business executives and education leaders dedicated to improving the performance of the public school system by influencing state education policy and stimulating community-based school improvement initiatives.
