If Koko really has the equivalent of a fair to middling human IQ (which I'd like to hear more evidence for before I accept that as true), it's because Koko is a prodigy among apes -- she has been world famous for 15 to 20 years, during which period researchers have found it very frustrating to find other apes as teachable as Koko (e.g., her baby wasn't smart enough to learn sign language from her).
