\doc\web\98\10\stanford.txt If you saw the Sunday Seattle Times, it was like when Diana died, they gave nearly half of the 1st section to his life and death. For a contrary view, David Blomstrom is a Seattle Teacher who may be Stanford's leading critic. http://www.geobop.com/Education.htm http://www.geobop.com/Education/JS/Home.htm tribute to John Stanford Here's a msnbc bulletin board discussion bbs.msnbc.com/bbs/localking/index.asp Stanford truly embodies the problem with education when people like a guy who makes everybody feel empowered and positive better than a guy who simply know what he's doing like Thaddeus Lott or Jaime Escalante who actually delivers poor kids with high test scores. He was a great hero and saint, but not a good superintendent. Stanford called for requiring a C average to graduate when the black gpa average is less than a C, called for teachers to spend 1 day a week outside the classroom, and called for staffers to spend 1 day off the job helping in the classroom. The Seattle Time claims test scores are up, but if it's the WASL, every school in the state jumped by 50%, mostly likely because the test was 50% easier, not because of Stanford, and even norm-referenced test scores were rising under the unpopular white guy they had before. The schools with the highest percentages of blacks and hispanics consistently show up on the bottom of either the WASL or CTBS tests. Stanford never completed any formal plan for reform. Unfortunately, his death will be even more enthusiam for more of the same instead of a frank assessement of how Stanford really peformed. From: David Blomstrom Subject: Re: stanford? I'm desperately hoping someone will add their voice to mine. Mr. Mak says he's going to post something this evening. As long as I'm the only one speaking out, I'm going to be perceived as a wacko, no matter what a say. Actually, I've already converted two or three former Stanford fans. But it's still hard bucking the Seattle Establishment and national media! I have no plans on resuming "GeoNews." It was a good idea and experience, but I kind of flaked out towards the end. I failed miserably at getting any two-way communication going and finally got sick of hearing nothing but my own ranting. The silence in this city is deafening, isn't it?
