The NLSY79 database contains test scores for 11,878 non-institutionalized American youth born between 1957 and 1964. The Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) was administered to these young people in 1980. The ASVAB has 10 subtests. Four of them are used to compute the revised Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT) score. The AFQT is a good measure of IQ. However, unlike many IQ tests, scores are provided in percentile form. The test results are in the public domain. Which means that were Gilman interested in facts, he could plunk down $30 like the rest of us drudges and analyze the data himself. Unless his version of SPSS is better at spotting myths than mine, this is what his computer would spit out. ______________________________________ Mean AFQT score, expressed as percentile Jewish males (n=55) 75 Jewish females (n=54) 69 All Jewish examinees (n=109) 72 ______________________________________ Needless to say, these mean values are what anyone with a functioning brain would call on the high side. IMHO, the most dangerous stereotype comes not from the media, the politicians, or the people in the street, but from the Gilmans them- selves. It is a stereotype that sees all of us--save these enlightened social theorists--as too incompetent to observe, evaluate, and draw conclusions from the world around us. We are but dolts, waiting to be rescued from our delusions by these savants. A good read is the book "Stereotype Accuracy." I forget the authors' names, but I'm pretty sure Gilman isn't among them.
