TEXTBOOKS INCORPORATE "EVERYDAY" DOCUMENT LITERACY \doc\web\98\09\worktest.txt Date sent: Tue, 10 Nov 1998 16:45:36 -0600 (CST) To: "ClearingHouse" From: "eca@fastlane.net" Subject: [education-consumers] Does This Look Like STW or Am I Just Being Paranoid? Send reply to: "eca@fastlane.net" ===================================================================== Forwarded from EDD. Textbooks always fall in line with progressive notions and help to perpetuate ignorance. Jeanne ===================================================================== It's reading textbook adoption year in KY, so last night I went to a presentation of MacMillan/McGraw-Hill's "Spotlight on Literacy" program. One thing that really caught my attention was their boast that each level included " Practical/Workplace Reading" Examples that they gave included: reading a phone book, reading directions, reading a bus schedule, etc. I am curious to see if any of the other textbook presentations I attend will include this, too. Has this always been a part of reading books? Did it use to be called something else? To be honest, I don't remember anything like that in my reading books when I was a kid, but learning to read a phone book doesn't make for very memorable reading either. MacMillan/McGraw-Hill is the parent company of the group that was awarded the new Kentucky CATS test, so of course everything is aligned to our "curriculum standards"! Talk about teaching to the test! MEH
