(You may know that already.) I've just begun reading a new book, "The Myths That Divide Us: How Lies Have Poisoned American Race Relations" by John Perazzo. (World Studies Books, Briarcliff Manor, New York, phone (914) 747-7670; fax (914) 747-2910; ISBN 0-9651268-0-3) This is what Perazzo says about West: "Cornel West, an Ivy League professor of religion, philosophy, and African American studies, brands the United States a "racist patriarchical" nation. "White America," he writes, "has been historically weak-willed in ensuring racial justice and has continued to resist fully accepting the humanity of blacks." This has resulted, he claims, in the creation of many "degraded and oppressed people who are hungry for identity, meaning, and self-worth." Professor West attributes most of the black community's problems to "existential angst derived from the lived experience of ontological wounds and emotional scars inflicted by white supremacist beliefs and images permeating U.S. society and culture," and so on and so forth. West called the 1992 Los Angeles riots "a multiracial, trans-class, and largely male display of justified social rage." The book lays a lot of blame on the media for its one-sided race-baiting, and discusses the activities of civil rights "activists" and university professors. I saw an article this summer in Newsweek, I think, that said that Cornel West and that woman (his co-author) were starting an organization that purports to support parents. It was just after I saw Colleen and Gayle Cloud in Sacramento at an academic standards meeting. Funny, we briefly talked about how we need a national organization for the support of parents; but the type that West came up with is not what we had in mind! You have to give credit to the left for covering all the bases. They are savvy, that's for sure, seeming to come to the aid of us parents.
