It is titled "Building with Words: City schools hope phonics boosts reading" by Deborah Anderluh. You will want this article for your files. www.sacbee.com Marvi EDUCATION CONSUMERS CLEARINGHOUSE >> Marvi - I am a homeschooling mom that posted a question late last year on ECC - "If you could choose any textbook to use, what would it be?" I received many responses. The results were - Open Court reading and Saxon math. On Thursday we received our first shipment of Open Court (Collections for Young Scholars) 2nd grade materials. I am continuously amazed by the high quality of SRA materials! My son has a very strong phonics background. We used ABeka 1st and 2nd grade English (www.abeka.com). I wanted to switch to a secular publisher. I want to highly recommend SRA Spelling and SRA Art Connections. The spelling is phonics based and makes sense. The Teacher's edition is simple and straight forward. The teacher's edition includes for each weekly spelling list: two teacher directed lessons, answers to four student pages, and dictation sentences for the weekly test. I enjoyed using Art Connections (student edition only) with my son, the two page layout is perfect. The first page has a famous work of art. The second page explains the concept to be learned, an art activity to do, and an example of the project completed by a child the same age. I appreciate the high quality binding of the materials. The hardback books have a sewn seam. At the end of each unit in the Open Court student anthologies is a bibliography of literature. I plan on having my children read some of these suggestions. I could see any parent supplementing the reading program by having their child read these selections (paper back versions are not that expensive or use the library). SRA has done a wonderful job in creating truly educational materials! In the years to come, my homeschool will continue using all three programs.
