I am another recovered ASCD member. I quit about 5 years ago after about
10 years as a member. Actually, in my experience, they do publish the
occasional piece reporting solid research or reflecting informed and
intelligent thought, but most of their stuff is very well-presented
claptrap. Their production values (in their magazine, Educational
Leadership, their books, their conferences, and their tapes) are very
high. It is the quality of the thinking that goes into all these
materials that is so bad. The real problem is that ASCD (like much of
what passes for the "education profession") has no intellectual
standards. People who come to this profession from training in an actual
academic field (e.g., E. D. Hirsch) usually are appalled by what passes
for "research" and "professional activities" in the education
profession.

I think you have discovered why I have resigned from both ASCD
and TASCD. The sum total of everything that they print and advocate
falls within the parameters of your post. Things that do not support
this CULT ideology never see the light of day in their conversations or
printed material.

Dear loop:
The attached file is the body of the presentation three Washington
researchers (including myself) did January 29th on the FAILED pilot
program, "Schools for the 21st Century" As I have stated before, this was
introduced and passed into law while Booth Gardner was governor (1987),
who had hired Tucker as a consultant to his staff - this was a TUCKER pilot
and we have documentation that America 2000/NASDC used this legislation as
a foundation for their program.
The new "performance-based" assessment ( the kind of test developed to
measure thier "new definition of student learning") in the state has proven
that these schools involved scored BELOW the more traditional schools who
were not involved in these reform theories, as were the C21 schools since
1987. This should be national news. We have experienced a reluctance by
the media to catch on to this story even though a Senator did a wonderful
editorial exposing this. So far that editorial was printed in only one
state newspaper even though it was sent out statewide. Our presentation
was even denied coverage on the state version of CSPAN. Two state Senators
hired, out of their own pockets, a video company to come in and video the
presentation. We are going to make the video available soon. This
presentation was based on the document (compiled by Peter Holly - also key
in Iowa and Kentucky) which never saw the light of day - it was never
turned into the resource document that was supposed to have the evidence to
support the REQUIREMENT OF THE LAW that this pilot show that student
learning had improved - their evidence is purely antedotal - no wonder they
didn't want this document out. This document which was 782 pages of loose
handwritten notes was transcribed by Lynn Stuter and given to the
legislature so that they could see exactly what goes on in the classroom
under education restructuring. Nothing is held back in this document - the
true story is here and it is frightening.
