To: TAGFORUM @ MAELSTROM.STJOHNS.EDU From: king @ ACCESS.DIGEX.NET Subject: [TAGFORUM] Dumbing Down Date: 11/14/97 12:02:42 AM A teacher friend of mine dropped by an online chat session last night quite distraught over the proposed changes to the New York State Regent's diplomas. Not being from NY, I'm not familiar with the program as it now stands. But, if I understood her correctly, they're talking about getting rid of the "local" diploma (what you'd get if you didn't pass the Regent's Exams) in favor of keeping kids in high school five or six years, if necessary, so that everyone either gets a Regent's level diploma or leaves without a diploma entirely. Her concerns were that this was the beginning of the "dumbing down" since special education students would have lower passing scores for the Regent's diploma under the new system. Also, it just seems beyond belief that the state would get away with requiring two or more additional years of high school before a student could receive a diploma and graduate. Does anyone know of a website that has the text of the proposed changes to the Regent's diploma requirements?
