Fall 1995 MEAP Test Results Fall 1995 Michigan Educational Assessment Program Statewide Results February 1996 Fall 1995 Michigan Educational Assessment Program Statewide Results Introduction Unlike other years, the Michigan Educational Assessment Program only tested students in mathematics and reading at grades 4 and 7 during the fall 1995 testing window. This spring, March 4-22, students in grades 5 and 8 will take science and writing tests and students in grade 11 will take the high school proficiency tests. The results of those tests will not be available until late August. About the Reading Tests This is the seventh year of the MEAP Essential Skills Reading Test. The test results indicate the extent to which students are attaining the knowledge, skills and strategies that the State Board of Education and Michigan educators have defined as essential for all students in the area of reading. Reading test scores are reported in three performance categories: satisfactory, moderate and low. In order for a student to achieve a satisfactory score they must meet the standard on both the story and the informational reading selections. Moderate performance is characterized by the student who meets the standard on only one of the selections. Low performance describes the student who does not meet the standard on either the reading or the story selection. Reading Results The fourth and seventh grade reading results continued to show improvement. Almost half (49.9%) of the fourth graders achieved a score of satisfactory this year. 42.3% of seventh graders scored satisfactory. Over the last five years, 1991 < 1995, the percent of students scoring satisfactory increased substantially and, just as important, the percentage of students scoring in the low category dropped. Students continue to perform better on the story selection than on the informational selection. However, the percentage of students performing well on the informational selection continues to increase. This suggests that teachers are utilizing instructional strategies to enhance learning across the curriculum and are providing students with opportunities to apply strategies in all of their reading. About the Mathematics Tests This year is the fifth year of the MEAP Essential Skills Mathematics Test. The test assesses a studentOs ability to conceptualize and use higher order thinking skills which are necessary for employment and real life problem solving. The test is comprised of seven components: whole numbers; fractions, decimals, ratio and percent; measurement; geometry; statistics and probability; algebraic ideas; and problem solving and logical reasoning. In Mathematics, a student's overall performance is described as satisfactory, moderate or low. In order to obtain satisfactory on the mathematics test a student must receive a score of 520 or above on the test. Moderate performance is characterized by a score of 500 to 519 and low performance is below 500. Mathematics Results The fourth and seventh grade mathematics results continue to show steady improvement. The percent of fourth grade students scoring in the satisfactory category increased from 61.6% in 1994 to 63.1% in 1995. At seventh grade the percent increased from 48.9% to 55.0%. This is the first time that more than half the seventh graders in the state have scored in the satisfactory category. Every year the test has been administered there have been steady to substantial gains in the percent of students in the satisfactory category at both grade levels, and, just as important, there has been a steady decline in the percent of students in the low category. Student performance was strongest in whole numbers, fractions, decimals, ratio and percent, measurement, and statistics and probability in both grades. The weakest areas for fourth grade were geometry and problem solving, while for seventh grade the weaknesses were in algebraic ideas and geometry. While student performance in mathematics increased substantially over the last several years, schools should examine their own results to insure that their instructional programs are aligned with the Essential Goals and Objectives for Mathematics Education. Educators should continue to stress mathematical reasoning, communication, problem solving and connections. Special attention should be given to Geometry instruction for all students. Additional Information Test results are also shown for non-public schools and public school academies testing in 1995. MEAP testing in public school academies was optional this year and very few public school academies participated in testing. Therefore, these results should be interpreted with caution. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TABLE OF CONTENTS MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION FALL 1995 MEAP STATEWIDE RESULTS Section 1 - Statewide Mathematics Results Table 1-1.
