Cal was also quoted quite liberally in the book "My Country: My Right To Serve" which advocated homosexuals in the military. In it he boasts of his "conquests" while serving in Vietnam, his use of supposedly secure military facilities for trysts, his getting caught in the act in the bushes and his brazen response, and his "award" from other homosexuals for getting the highest ranking officer into bed with him. When I used the above at a debate in Seattle with Cal and Gretta Cammermeyer (they made a movie about her starring Glen Close) to make my point that allowing open homosexuals to serve would be subversive, he raised his fist in the air and shook it. The dominant media culture never bothered to print Cal's boasting in the book either, although I made the information available to them. There was alot they didn't bother to print about the now-deceased Senator, but they went to a great deal of effort to portray him as a crusading hero when he died.
