I have it on the word of a state school board member-- Warren Smith-- that WASL will never be a graduation requirement!!! If not required for graduation, why WASL at all? Some have long predicated that the WASL would be dropped and replaced with the NAEP. Dropping the WASL or another test as a graduation requirement wouldn't be surprising given the School-to-Work agenda. The diploma will be replaced with Certificates of Mastery and Advanced Mastery. Performance will be assessed by panel review of work skills portfoliosand the Culminating/Senior Project, which must align with career paths. It would also support ed deform's "multiple intelligences" and Individual Education Plan approaches. Not only will each child "meet standard" in their own manner, but different standards will be set for various demographic groups based upon skin color, family income, etc. (Locke's recently passed bill sets this up.) This would solve that nasty "people really do have different abilities" problem, and EVERYONE can be deemed successful. WA is still accountable to the federal govt. for providing acceptable assessment results, so I'm not sure how this will all come together. Time will tell.
