As a retired teacher, I observed the M Hunter method and it script and teacher video of the approved method in Milwaukee. I met Madeline Hunter, she was genial. However, the Skinnerian approach in the M Hunter method certainly did/wouldn't suit me. It is a method much like "color by the numbers" which gives a completed/but supplied "outcome"/drawing. In learning there is good, better, best, regarding the student's acquiring information/knowledge. The OBE process, learning by byte, without thinking, reflecting, testing for truth, to me, was much like the M Hunter approach. Her background in coming to conclusions using her teaching system would yield some insight. For further information: the book, "The deliberate dumbing down of America, by Charlotte Iserbyt,1999, pp. 94, 228, A113 would be of some help in the matter. As for me, I came to my own conclusions as a classroom teacher, early on the matter. The SRA series used in reading, I am sure is beneficial to low-achievement reading students, for example, too, but it should not be used for the creative mind. Reading skills, should be adjusted a bit for individual needs, I would think, but I saw the Hunter method used across the board -and in my opinion, does not lend itself to the real purpose of education-once skills are learned, learn to think. However, my original post, to me, is how I then/now intened it to read. Some teachers like the ease of Direct Instruction or say, Madeline Hunter's prescribed learning, others do not. However, a child should have access to the best ways-say intense, systematic phonics, for instance. I hope others on the loop/off-loop will comment. gene malone Arthur Hu: Under the new administrtion at our school I was evaluated and "asked" to change my teaching methods to the Madeline Hunter model specifically. After perfoming this for three weeks I can say it is very flashy with no real substance except entertainment for the students. I have also noticed that I am doing less instruction and assessment because this model requires student feedback constantly and time does not allow this as well as the model itself. Also, we are not going forward as quickly as before. I have also questioned if this method is culturally biased to certain learning styles (field dependent/field independent). I am curious to know your experience so far. Most of my friends prefer "direct instruction" and "rote learning", and good old fashioned competition rather than the ridiculous "high standards for all" outcome based education model. -----Original Message----- From: Gil Armenta [mailto:garmenta@hotmail.com] Sent: Monday, November 12, 2001 6:39 PM To: arthurhu@halcyon.com Cc: frdm2000@wi.net Subject: Madeline Hunter Hello, The below information was found on the internet. It refers to Madeline Hunter. I am having to teach following the Madeline Hunter model, however, I feel it does not favor the minority students and field dependent students. Would you have any research to confirm this? The Housing and Urban Development grants via Model Cities monies brought these sub-standard programs to a helpless, and most needy Americans already with economic ,education problems. Add this to your "things to do"-research. In the 196O's and '7O's this was the case-then these sub-standard programs-after the urban experimentation-spread to the other areas of schooling throughout the country. I was there/observed. I think you would call the above programs DI or spin offs of DI which is more of a remedial approach to reading not for above average/average ability students-as I observed the stuff. Madeline Hunter is now deceased. Wish some folks would look into the Effective Schools (yuk) reform measures that have done so much damage/but fit OBE. Gene-OBE by the Lake-Kenosha,Wisc Gil
