AIMS PILOT TESTS 4TH GRADERS ON KNOWLEDGE OF PHAROH z43\doc\web\2000\07\egypt.txt something that this reminds me of is our AIMS test here in arizona. two years ago, our school piloted the AIMS (4th grade) and one of the 'essay' questions for the writing section of the test asked students to write about what they would do if they were pharoh of egypt. i thought it was interesting that in the WRITING portion, if the child has no background information on egyptian history and government, they would totally bomb the job even if they were incredible writers. this is the type of thing that we need to be pointing out to polititians and state departments of ed. but unfortunately, it also can create the problem that someone was talking about here (happened in CA?) where the state department decides that open ended assignments on a test just gets thrown out of the possibilities for assessment practices.
