VINCE SARICH AGREES ON 0.8 SD ATHLETIC AQ DIFFERENCE \doc\web\2000\01\sarich.txt Date sent: Wed, 12 Jan 2000 11:46:38 +1300 From: Vince Sarich Subject: [h-bd] Tredoux on black athletic ability I suppose that, to some extent, who gets credit for what isn't all that important, but ..... When I brought up the article Tredoux referred to on the Internet, I was interested to note that the NBA discussion paralleled my effort in Skeptic 3:3, (1985) pg 87. As far as I'm aware, that was the first time any such calculation had been published, though if I'm wrong on that I'd very much appreciate seeing any reference to an earlier effort. I also got the same ~0.9 SD (standard deviation) difference. The use of AQ also sounds very much like Steve Sailer's take-off on a similar calculation I made concerning the degree of advantage the Kalenjin have over the rest of the world with respect to distance running. There the difference is about 1.5 SD, and Steve ingeniously converted this to a RQ (running quotient) of 122 -- to put it into a more familiar context. Most people don't think in terms of SD units, but they do know about IQ. OK, there's my complaint for the day. Having said that, I would like Tredoux to check out my Kalenjin estimate, especially with respect to the problem of sampling. Vincent Sarich
