The Foundation seeks to increase the number of African Americans, American Indians/Alaska Natives, Asian Pacific Americans and Hispanic Americans enrolling in and completing undergraduate and graduate degree program. The awards will enable 20,000 young Americans to attend undergraduate and graduate institutions of their choice and be prepared to assume important roles as leaders in their professions and in their communities. If you know students in one of the above groups; who are citizens or permanent residents; have a cumulative 3.3 GPA; have applied to, been accepted in or are enrolled full-time in an accredited college or university for 2000-2001; have significant financial need; have demonstrated leadership ability through participation in community service, extra curricular activities or other activities they may be eligible for this award. Community college applicants must be full-time with an academic major and a declared intent to pursue a four-year degree. I have nomination guidelines and forms in my office. Let me know if you'd like a copy. Deadline is March 15, 2000. Kayleen U. As, I believe, the university with the largest numbers of such students, CUNY looks to me to be a natural to win a good number of these -- IF WE GET FULLY MOBILIZED!!! Nominations packets must be submitted by March 15, which does not give us much time. Please spread the word. I have heard nothing about these from within CUNY. There is a toll-free number at 1.877.690.4677. Web Site: www.gmsp.org Gates Millennium Scholars P.O.Box 10599 Fairfax, Virginnia 22031 Note. I have put the categories specified as minority in quotes above. There are restrictions, I discover, with a phone call to the above: 1) Must be a CITIZEN (no green card holders -- seems unfair to me) 2) 3.0 Academic Index 3) Financial Need 4) Evidence of Leadership 5) Eligible: high school seniors, undergraduates, seniors heading to graduate school, students in graduate school (BUT limits on fields for those already in graduate school to such as math, computers, engineering and several comparable fields (per phone report at# above). 6) Small Print on Asian Pacific: Filipino, Chinese, Korean, South Asians, Japanese, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Laotian, Himong, Thai, and Pacific Islander Americans (Does this include Indian sub-continent -- South Asian?). Do it! Nominations may be made by high school principals, college presidents/deans/faculty. Every one of our minority students with a 3.0 or better index should be nominated. May I ask Bill Phipps to post this to the Forum as I have run out quota!? Will also post this on my CUNY Web site: http://pnews.org/boards/cuny/- Ed Kent 718-951-5324 (voice mail only)
